Court of Appeal in Abuja has confirmed the election of Governor Douye Diri, who won under the Peoples Democratic Party in the November 2023 Bayelsa governorship election.
On Tuesday, the court postponed its decision on the appeal by Labour Party and its candidate Udengmobofa Eradiri, who contested the ruling of the Bayelsa State governorship election tribunal.
On Saturday, a three-judge panel delivered a verdict affirming that the tribunal was correct in rejecting the Labour Party’s petition due to insufficient evidence.
The court stated that Eradiri and the Labour Party did not provide enough proof for their claims of disqualification and certificate forgery against Governor Diri and his Deputy.
The court further explained that the accusation of attaching forged documents to form EC8 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the third respondent is a pre-election issue and should not have been taken to the tribunal.
Additionally, the panel imposed a cost of two hundred thousand Naira against the appellant, to be paid to each respondent in the case.
