Kylian Mbappe and his team lost to Spain on Tuesday, ending their Euro 2024 journey. Despite being strong in defense, they couldn’t score more than one goal in open play during their six matches.

Spain secured a place in the final, but France won’t play in a third-place playoff. The World Cup tradition of a third-place match doesn’t apply to the European Championship, which hasn’t had such a match since 1980.

In 1980, Italy and Czechoslovakia played the last third-place match, which ended in a penalty shootout. The lack of interest in this match led to its removal from the tournament. Since then, there have been no third-place playoffs in the European Championship.

France won’t have the chance to compete for third place, which may be a relief after their poor performances this month.

France had high hopes for Euro 2024 but didn’t live up to expectations. Despite being the top-ranked European team, they struggled and finished second in their group. They narrowly beat Belgium and Portugal but lost to Spain in the semi-finals.
