A heated argument broke out between Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development on July 9. They disputed allegations of corruption within her ministry.
The committee summoned the Minister and her team to explain the alleged diversion of N1.5 billion meant for paying contractors. Some contractors claimed they hadn’t been paid for their work.
Initially, the hearing was calm but escalated into shouting. Committee members and the Minister exchanged accusations.
The Committee chair asked whether funds allocated for 2023 were received by the ministry. Another member accused the Minister of excluding ministry staff from decision-making.
Kennedy-Ohanenye objected strongly, denying allegations against her. The chairperson intervened, urging respectful dialogue.
The argument continued, highlighting tensions over financial management in the Ministry of Women Affairs.
