The state House of Assembly is now debating the Lagos State Electricity Bill 2024, which aims to end power shortages in Lagos.
During a one-day public hearing on the bill on Wednesday at the assembly complex, Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunlewe, gave assurances to this effect.
According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), the bill aims to create the Lagos power market and repeal the Lagos State Power Sector Reform Law of 2018.
A constitutional change enabling states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within the national grid was signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari on March 17, 2023.
According to Ogunlewe, Lagos State will have the ability to produce, transmit, and distribute electricity to its citizens directly if the bill is signed into law.
After the bill was signed into law, the commissioner assured everyone in Lagos that they would all have access to dependable electricity in two years.
He said,
“We think the passing of this bill ushers in the energy revolution that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had promised,” he stated.
“Independent operation of the state grid will prevent the issues associated with a single source of power.
The first advantage of this measure for Lagosians is that it includes provisions for environmental sustainability and new market operators.
“The bill will address the issues that are currently impeding operators from conducting business,
