The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) FCT Command has taken significant action to improve road safety in Abuja, arresting over 100 traffic offenders in just one week. This initiative is part of the ongoing “Operation Green Light Enforcement” focused on the city center.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja, the FCT Sector Commander, Muta’a Chorrie, disclosed these developments. Chorrie expressed deep concern over the alarming trend of motorists, particularly commercial drivers, habitually disregarding traffic lights. This practice poses a significant risk to road safety and the wellbeing of all road users.
Chorrie made it clear that the FRSC is determined to continue sanctioning traffic violators, regardless of their status or influence, to ensure sanity and order on Abuja’s roads. The enforcement of traffic laws is not just about penalties but also about fostering a culture of compliance and safety awareness among drivers.
Indiscriminate parking by commercial drivers has also been a major issue. To combat this, the FRSC has increased the mobility of its patrol personnel. This strategic move is aimed at better monitoring and controlling the activities of road users, ensuring that traffic regulations are strictly followed.
The FCT Command has been proactive in engaging with Transport Union Leaders through regular meetings. These discussions focus on addressing various traffic-related issues across the six area councils of the territory. The collaboration is aimed at finding sustainable solutions to traffic violations and enhancing road safety.
Chorrie stated,
“We have arrested 100 traffic offenders within seven days in FCT. We will not relent until sanity is restored on our highways,”
This statement underscores the FRSC’s unwavering commitment to maintaining road order and reducing traffic-related incidents.
Chorrie also appealed to motorists to avoid overloading their vehicles. Overloading not only contravenes traffic regulations but also poses a serious risk during emergencies due to the difficulty in maneuvering overloaded vehicles. The FRSC is steadfast in its resolve not to tolerate actions that could tarnish the country’s image or endanger lives.
Finally, the FRSC boss advised Nigerians to refrain from boarding overloaded vehicles. He emphasized that safety should always be a priority, and boarding a vehicle that is overloaded compromises this safety. During emergencies, overloaded vehicles are harder to control, increasing the risk of accidents and fatalities.
The FRSC’s Operation Green Light Enforcement is a crucial step towards ensuring that the roads in Abuja are safe for all users. Through strict enforcement, increased patrols, and collaboration with transport unions, the FRSC is working tirelessly to restore and maintain order on the highways.
