NASU and SSANU, representing the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities respectively, have announced plans for nationwide protests starting on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. This action follows a breakdown in negotiations with government officials regarding critical issues affecting their members, including the non-payment of four months’ salaries and other unresolved grievances within universities and inter-university centers.
In a joint circular addressed to branch chairmen and made public on Sunday, July 7, the unions expressed deep concern over what they perceive as the government’s lack of commitment to resolving these issues. Despite meetings with key officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour & Employment, including the National Universities Commission, the unions reported a disappointing lack of substantial progress or assurances.
Consequently, NASU and SSANU have outlined a series of actions to escalate their protest. They have mandated all branches to hold general meetings on Monday, July 8, 2024, to mobilize members and highlight the government’s perceived insensitivity. On Tuesday, July 9, protests will simultaneously take place across all branches nationwide, aimed at drawing attention to their grievances. The unions have also planned a national protest in Abuja on Thursday, July 18, 2024, indicating their readiness to escalate their actions if their demands remain unmet.
