“I confirm he died between Sunday night, June 17, and Monday morning, June 17,” the source told Leadership.

“He had legal issues with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) while alive.

“He was implicated in two cases involving the alleged diversion of about N24 billion for former staff of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and N2 billion from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

“During the investigation, he returned several billion naira to the Federal Government,”

Otunla had a notable career in finance, including serving on the board of the Central Bank of Nigeria and as accountant-general of Oyo State in 1989.

He later joined the Federal Civil Service and was appointed Accountant-General of the Federation by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.

Otunla retired from the civil service in 2015, but his reputation was tarnished by allegations of corruption, involving the diversion of public funds amounting to billions of naira.

He was involved in ongoing court cases related to these accusations until his death.
