The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles following the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The NFF shared this decision in a statement released to journalists on Thursday, June 13.
The statement mentioned that the NFF Executive Committee met on Wednesday to discuss key issues.
“The NFF Executive Committee met on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, both in person and online, to discuss important matters regarding Nigerian football. They expressed deep regret for the poor performance of the Super Eagles in four out of ten matches in the current 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The committee promised to take necessary steps to prepare the team better for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September and the continuation of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025,” the NFF stated.
Additionally, the committee decided to hire a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles soon, to improve the team’s chances in the upcoming AFCON qualifiers and remaining World Cup qualifiers.
The NFF also criticized some players for their poor attitude and agreed to enhance their scouting program to find talented Nigerian players worldwide who can strengthen the team.
Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, faced criticism after the team lost 2-1 to Benin Republic on Monday in the fourth round of the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Prior to this, the team had a 1-1 draw with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the third round of the qualifiers. These results have placed Nigeria fifth in their six-team group, with six games remaining.
