The Delta State High Court in Asaba has sentenced Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Delta State Police to death for murder.
On Tuesday, Justice C. D. Diai ruled that Ebri was guilty of killing phone dealer Onyeka Ibeh in Asaba.
Ibeh, a well-known phone seller in Asaba, was shot dead on April 5, 2023, at a police checkpoint on Ugbolu road, in front of his pregnant wife.
The police had stopped the couple’s car for a search. After waiting for the officers who didn’t attend to him, Ibeh decided to drive off.
Inspector Ebri then fired at the car, hitting Ibeh in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
This incident led to protests by youths in Asaba, who marched to the police headquarters demanding justice.
