Justice C.A. Obiozor of the Federal High Court in Benin City has sentenced Osazee Kenneth Imagbenikaro to jail for spraying naira notes.
Imagbenikaro was found guilty of two charges related to spraying naira notes on May 16, 2024. This action is against Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2007 and is punishable under Section 21(1) of the same Act.
One charge stated that on April 28, 2023, at Ogida Police Barracks in Benin City, Edo State, Imagbenikaro sprayed N100 notes at a funeral, which is illegal under the mentioned Act.
Imagbenikaro admitted guilt when the charges were read in court. The prosecution lawyer, Francis Jirbo, then asked the court to convict and sentence him.
The defense lawyer asked for leniency, stating that Imagbenikaro is remorseful.
Judge Obiozor sentenced Imagbenikaro to six months in prison for each charge or a fine of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) for each. Additionally, Imagbenikaro must promise in writing to behave well in the future.
