66-Year-Old Man Arrested for Threatening to Kill Donald Trump on Social Media

In a troubling case of online threats against a prominent political figure, 66-year-old Ronald Lee Syvrud from Cochise County, Arizona, was arrested after allegedly making death threats against former President Donald Trump on social media. Syvrud’s threats surfaced over a span of two weeks, triggering a swift response from local authorities and federal investigators.

The Arrest

Syvrud was taken into custody on Thursday, August 22, without incident, according to Carol Capas, spokesperson for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office. Officials had been tracking Syvrud after identifying him as an “investigative lead” due to his threats against Trump, who is once again a Republican candidate for the presidency.

Syvrud’s threats coincided with Trump’s planned visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in Cochise County on the same day. Law enforcement took the threats seriously, especially in light of a recent assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania just six weeks prior.

When officials initially attempted to arrest Syvrud on Wednesday evening, he was not at his home. Authorities continued to monitor his movements, and by Thursday, they successfully apprehended him.

Multiple Charges and Warrants

The arrest of Syvrud is more complicated than just the recent social media threats. The 66-year-old man already had several outstanding warrants against him. These charges include a DUI and failure to appear in court in Wisconsin. Additionally, Syvrud was wanted in Arizona for failing to register as a sex offender and involvement in a hit-and-run incident.

Given the severity of these existing charges, his threats against Trump only added to his legal troubles. Officials considered him a significant risk, prompting the coordinated effort to bring him into custody before any potential harm could occur.

A Broader Security Concern

Syvrud’s threats come at a time when tensions surrounding political figures are high, with the recent assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania fresh on the minds of many. The incident underscores the growing concern about threats made on social media and their potential to escalate into real-world violence.

Law enforcement agencies across the country are increasingly vigilant, tracking online activity that could signal danger to public figures. In this case, the authorities acted quickly to neutralize the threat before Trump’s visit to Cochise County, ensuring the safety of the former president and everyone in the area.
