United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order granting federal workers two extra holidays this year. Christmas Eve, December 24, and Boxing Day, December 26, will now be official days off for government employees. The move allows federal workers to enjoy a five-day weekend this holiday season, as Christmas falls on a Thursday in 2025.
The executive order specifies that all federal departments and agencies will be closed on these days, and employees are excused from duty. This brings the total number of federal holidays in the United States to 13 for the year. Trump previously granted Christmas Eve off for federal workers in 2019 and 2020 when the day fell on a Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
Earlier this year, Trump also declared additional national holidays on November 11 and May 8 to commemorate victories in World War I and World War II. The latest decision continues his trend of providing federal employees with extended holiday breaks during significant occasions.
Federal workers and citizens alike welcomed the announcement, highlighting the benefit of extra rest and family time during the festive season. The gesture is expected to be appreciated by thousands of government employees across the country.
