23 Nigerian Electricity Workers Die on Duty in Q1 2024

In the first quarter of 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that 23 electricity workers tragically lost their lives while on duty. These deaths were part of 55 accidents that also resulted in injuries to 31 other workers.

Major Causes of Accidents

The report identified several major causes of these incidents:

  • Wire Snaps: Resulted in 6 deaths and 6 injuries.
  • Illegal/Unauthorized Access: Caused 5 deaths and 2 injuries.
  • Acts of Vandalism: Led to 2 deaths and 5 injuries.
  • Unsafe Acts/Conditions: Responsible for 10 deaths and 12 injuries.
  • Falls from Height: Caused 2 injuries.

Companies with Highest Casualties

Among the electricity distribution companies, the highest number of casualties were reported by:

  • Eko Disco: 13 casualties.
  • Benin Disco: 8 casualties.
  • Jos Disco: 6 casualties.
  • Aba Power: 6 casualties.

Distribution Companies and Safety Issues

Distribution companies (Discos) were responsible for 96.30% of the casualties in Q1 2024. This continues a concerning trend from the previous quarter, where Discos accounted for 98.48% of casualties. The report highlights significant safety issues within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The high number of fatalities and injuries indicates a critical need for improved safety procedures and measures within the industry. Addressing these safety concerns is essential to prevent further loss of life and ensure a safer working environment for electricity workers in Nigeria.
