Edo state government bans Nursery and Primary graduation parties

The Edo State Government has announced major changes in the education system, including a ban on graduation parties for nursery and primary school pupils.

According to the Ministry, these new measures will start in the 2025/2026 academic year and are designed to ensure steady, consistent, and high-quality learning throughout Edo schools.

As part of the textbook reuse policy, younger siblings can now use approved books bought by their older brothers or sisters. Each approved textbook will stay in use for at least four years before being reviewed for updates.

Graduation events will now only be allowed for pupils completing Basic Education (Primary 1–JSS 3) and Senior Secondary 3 (SSS 3).

Even for these levels, celebrations will be simple and low-key. Prom parties are no longer allowed in schools.

Nursery and primary school pupils will no longer be permitted to host any graduation ceremonies or parties.

A major new requirement is that all JSS 3 students must complete entrepreneurship training before graduating. Starting next session, each JSS 3 graduate will receive two certificates: the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and a Skills Acquisition Certificate for their chosen trade.

The Ministry emphasized that these reforms aim to make Edo students not just academically prepared, but also equipped with practical skills to succeed in the modern, competitive world.
