Nigerian Army Transfers 277 Boko Haram Captives to Borno Government, Urges Others to Surrender

The Borno State Government received 277 persons rescued from Boko Haram captivity on Thursday, July 11, from the Nigerian Army.

Borno State’s capital, Maiduguri, hosted the handover ceremony in Maimalari Cantonment.

Major General Ken Chigbu, the Joint Task Force North-East’s Deputy Theatre Commander, oversaw the event. 

The rescued people were innocent citizens who had been caught in the state’s local government areas of Dikwa, Bama, and Monguno by the insurgency, Chigbu revealed during the ceremony.

 He made it clear that these people weren’t affiliated with Boko Haram.

He said,

“We consider those still in the forest as our brothers and sisters who deserve peace, and we appeal to them to come out, assuring them that the military is not interested in prolonging the fight.”

“The military’s objective is to restore normalcy and socioeconomic activities in the region through both kinetic and non-kinetic operations,”

Chigbu expressed gratitude to Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, and other regional and global allies for their assistance.

On behalf of the state government, Zuwaira Gambo, the Borno State Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, welcomed the rescued individuals and expressed gratitude to the military for their successful operation that resulted in the rescue of 277 individuals, including women and children. 

In her description of the rescued people’s support system, Gambo said, “They will be taken to a specialized center where they will receive various services such as mental health and psychosocial support, family reunification assistance, livelihood programs, and more.

” The Commissioner underlined that the goal is to offer them all the assistance they need to heal and reintegrate into their communities. She acknowledged her appreciation for the military’s rescue efforts and
