The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has mocked former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed, following a Supreme Court ruling against the Rivers State government.
The Supreme Court recently ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation to stop releasing funds to the Rivers State government.
This order will remain in place until Governor Sim Fubara follows legal and constitutional procedures.
The court also ruled that funds can only be released when a proper budget is approved by the Rivers House of Assembly under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule. Additionally, the court instructed the 27 members of the Rivers Assembly to resume their legislative duties immediately.
Reacting to the ruling, Wike expressed his happiness and emphasized that the era of impunity in Rivers State must end.
He criticized Fubara for ignoring court orders in the past and questioned whether Atiku and Bala Mohammed would continue to support him now.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Wike said:
“When you speak the truth in this country, people accuse you of blackmail. But today, the Supreme Court has made it clear—there must be order in governance. How can a governor, who swore to uphold the constitution, refuse to follow the law? When he ignored court orders before, some people praised him. I wonder if they will still support him now.”
Wike further criticized Fubara for failing to follow due process in the local government elections, arguing that the governor’s refusal to comply with electoral laws had led to unnecessary conflicts. He also warned that allowing lawlessness in governance could set a dangerous precedent for the country’s democracy.
“If we allow this kind of impunity to continue, one day, a single person will declare himself a government, and there will be nothing anyone can do,” Wike added.
With this ruling, the Supreme Court has reinforced the importance of following the law in governance. Many Nigerians are now watching closely to see how Governor Fubara and his supporters respond to the court’s decision.
