Goodluck Jonathan lists ways to ensure credible elections in West Africa

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has shared key steps to ensure free and fair elections in West Africa. Speaking at a two-day Reflection Conference on Democratic Elections in Abuja, he emphasized the importance of independent electoral commissions and neutral security forces.

Jonathan explained that election credibility depends on two main institutions: electoral bodies and security agencies. He stressed that these organizations must be free from political influence to function properly. Governments must invest in strengthening these institutions to ensure fair elections.

He also warned that if security agencies do not act impartially during elections, the process can lose credibility, leading to governance issues.

Jonathan recommended that electoral laws should be reviewed regularly to address challenges and adopt best practices. He also encouraged the use of technology in elections, stating that automation can improve transparency, efficiency, and public trust. However, he acknowledged that human interference sometimes limits its effectiveness.

The former president called for greater political tolerance and inclusion. He pointed out that factors like poverty, inequality, and climate change contribute to instability and must be addressed to strengthen democracy.

Jonathan urged both political leaders and citizens to commit to good governance, peaceful coexistence, and dialogue. He also encouraged governments and civil society groups to engage young people in politics and promote electoral integrity.

Reflecting on elections held between 2023 and 2024 in West Africa, Jonathan noted both progress and challenges. He emphasized the need to learn from past experiences to improve future elections.

By working together and making necessary improvements, he believes West Africa can achieve elections that truly reflect the will of the people and strengthen democracy.
