In October 2024, Aisha Suleiman, a teenage girl from Edo state, was wrongfully accused of poisoning five people, including her boyfriend and his friends, with pepper soup. The false accusation spread quickly on social media, leading to a violent public response. Aisha was nearly lynched by angry community members who believed she was responsible for the tragic deaths.
Aisha wasn’t even in the area when the incident occurred. She was far away in Iyakpi, while the deaths took place in Afashio. Despite this, she was captured, tied up, and nearly set on fire before authorities intervened to save her. She was then arrested and charged with poisoning.
However, after human rights activists got involved and the case was thoroughly investigated, it was revealed that the five victims actually died from inhaling carbon monoxide fumes from a generator, not from poisoned food. Aisha was exonerated, and the real cause of death came to light.
Aisha explained that the trouble began after she broke up with her boyfriend, and his father had forbidden her from visiting their home. On the day of the deaths, Aisha was at a completely different location.
Now that she has been cleared of all charges, people are calling for the person who spread the false accusation to face legal consequences.
Aisha’s case highlights the dangers of spreading misinformation and the importance of thorough investigations before making serious accusations.
