Jackson Omenazu, the newly elected President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has made a bold commitment to ensure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a prominent leader in the Igbo community. He believes that Kanu’s freedom is crucial for restoring peace in Igbo land.
In a statement made on Wednesday, Omenazu expressed his readiness to sacrifice his own liberty, and even his life, for Kanu’s release. He declared that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading socio-cultural organization representing over 80 million Igbos worldwide, would leave no stone unturned in securing Kanu’s freedom.
Omenazu drew inspiration from the Yoruba leadership, specifically citing the release of Sunday Igboho, and emphasized that a similar strong and strategic approach was necessary. He stressed that Ohanaeze would employ both innovative and discreet tactics to make sure Kanu is freed, avoiding past failed efforts.
As part of their efforts, Ohanaeze Ndigbo will work closely with all religious groups in Igbo land—whether Christian, Muslim, traditional, or Jewish—to unite in prayer and seek divine intervention for Kanu’s release. They will dedicate the last weekends of each month in 2025 to prayer and supplication.
Omenazu also called on President Tinubu to listen to the concerns of the Igbo people, offering himself as a guarantor for Kanu’s cooperation after his release. He believes Kanu’s return can lead to healing and reconciliation, not conflict.
In his statement, Omenazu urged every Igbo person, leader, and citizen to come together in this cause, reminding them of the sacrifices made by their ancestors in the fight for freedom. He made it clear that this effort is not just a call for Kanu’s freedom but a stand for justice and peace in Igbo land.
