Governor Alex Otti has provided updates on the proposed airport project in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North. During a media briefing in Umuahia, he explained that the airport is primarily a federal government initiative, with the state government assisting by constructing the runway.
The project initially began as a plan for an airstrip. However, Governor Otti’s administration convinced the federal government to upgrade it into a full airport. While the state is helping with the runway construction, there are no shared financial responsibilities between the federal and state governments.
The airport project is set to be launched on Tuesday by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo. Governor Otti thanked the federal government for this significant initiative.
Governor Otti addressed findings from a forensic audit conducted on the administration of his predecessor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu. The report uncovered that N10 billion was allegedly spent on a non-existent airport project. Investigations are ongoing, with some former officials already questioned by anti-corruption agencies.
The governor explained that the original site chosen by past administrations is now a developed area, making it unsuitable for airport construction. Building on that site would require demolishing structures and compensating landowners, which is not feasible.
The new location, situated between Aba and Umuahia, is strategically positioned to serve the state better. Governor Otti assured that landowners at the new site would receive fair compensation. He also dismissed protests against the site as politically motivated, claiming they came from individuals upset by his administration’s progress.
Governor Otti shared more updates about ongoing development in the state:
- Road Projects: While funds for some road projects, like the Ariam Usaka ring road, are not included in the 2024 budget, they will feature in the 2025 budget.
- Salaries: The state government will pay a 13th-month salary alongside December wages to ease financial pressure during the holidays.
- Education: Plans to build 20 smart schools and hire more teachers, especially in rural areas, are in motion. The administration is also considering special welfare packages for rural educators.
- Abia State University: The governor assured that recommendations from the White Paper on the Visitation Panel to Abia State University, Uturu, will be implemented.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and development, stating that his administration is focused on delivering results across all sectors.
