The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) recently expressed its unwavering support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its ongoing fight against corruption. This endorsement comes at a crucial time as the Supreme Court prepares to rule on a lawsuit involving the EFCC, initiated by 19 governors who are questioning the commission’s constitutionality.

At the 2024 National Cybercrime Summit held in Abuja, the chairman of the NGF and governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, underscored the need for collaboration in cybersecurity to enhance national development. The summit, organized by the EFCC in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme and the European Union, focused on improving digital skills as a means to combat cybercrime.

Governor Abdulrazaq highlighted the importance of changing public perceptions of crime. He commended the efforts of the EFCC, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in educating young Nigerians about crime, drug abuse, and patriotism. He stated, “You have our full support in this endeavor,” and called for a unified approach to promote positive behaviors that reflect Nigeria’s cultural values.

In line with this sentiment, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara also voiced his commitment to supporting the EFCC’s anti-corruption initiatives. He reassured the public of his willingness to cooperate with the commission and emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency for elected leaders.

The collective backing from the governors signals a robust commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts and tackling cybercrime, crucial for the country’s development and the well-being of its citizens.
