The ECOWAS Court of Justice (CCJ) recently made a significant change in leadership. Cape Verde’s Justice Ricardo Gonçalves has been elected as the new President, while Sierra Leone’s Justice Sengu Koroma will serve as the new Vice President. Both judges will hold their positions for a four-year term that cannot be renewed.

The election took place among the court’s five judges, and they were officially inaugurated by President Umaro Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, who previously chaired the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. Gonçalves takes over from Justice Edward Asante, who has been the court’s president for the past six years, and Koroma succeeds Ivory Coast’s Justice Gberi-bè Ouattara.

Justice Asante has been recommended for a position on Ghana’s Supreme Court, although he will remain a judge at the CCJ until his extended term ends in 2026. During his leadership, Asante oversaw remarkable improvements in the court’s functions. He played a key role in moving the court to a new building in Gudu District, Abuja, which was completed in 2023.

Under his guidance, the court introduced an electronic case management system that streamlined its processes. This innovation allows for both virtual and in-person court sessions, making it easier for applicants from ECOWAS member states to access justice. As a result, filing applications and participating in court proceedings have become more affordable and efficient.

Justice Asante also focused on filling key positions within the court, hiring experienced lawyers for the Registry and Research Departments. His efforts have set a solid foundation for the new leadership to build upon.

As Gonçalves and Koroma take on their new roles, they have the opportunity to continue the progress made by Asante and enhance the effectiveness of the ECOWAS Court even further.
