Six Dead, Five Injured as Trucks Crush Tricycles in Ibadan

A tragic road accident occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, October 14, 2024, resulting in the loss of six lives and injuries to five others. The crash happened at Oke Eleshin in the Ona Ara Local Government Area along Akanran Road. The accident involved a trailer carrying tiles, a lorry loaded with soft drinks, and two tricycles (commonly called Keke NAPEP).

According to reports, the accident began when the trailer lost control due to brake failure while descending a slope. As it lost control, it crashed into one of the tricycles. Shortly after, a lorry behind the trailer, in an attempt to avoid hitting it, crashed into another tricycle, further complicating the situation.

Of the five injured victims, most were passengers in the tricycles. Among them was a young pupil whose mother tragically lost her life in the accident. Four of the injured were rushed to Amuloko City Hospital. Two of the injured children received minor treatments and were discharged, while two others with severe injuries were admitted for further medical care.

Sadly, the six people who lost their lives were transported to an undisclosed hospital. The identities of the deceased remain unconfirmed at this time.

Eyewitnesses expressed their frustration, blaming the driver of the trailer, who fled the scene. Sympathizers at the scene argued that the driver could have steered the trailer into a ditch instead of crashing into the tricycles. Tensions rose when some locals attempted to set the vehicles involved on fire, but they were stopped by others at the scene.

The Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital, Raji Wale, confirmed that several victims were brought to the hospital after the crash for immediate medical attention.

This tragic accident has raised concerns about road safety and the condition of vehicles, particularly those on busy roads like Akanran Road.

“Four patients were taken to his hospital. The accident occurred in the early hours of today ( Monday). Six victims were brought here with varying degrees of injury. Some were taken to other hospitals. We were able to absorb the ones brought here. Two have been treated as out-patient victims and they have been stabilized and they have left,” Wale explained.

“Two kids have been treated and they are downstairs. One of them, I was told was in the Keke NAPEP with his mother. The mother died. The other two with severe injuries have been admitted and are being treated. They have been optimized and we are taking care of them presently.”
