Tragedy struck the Butura community in Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, when four young men were killed in an attack at a mining site on Friday night around 9 pm.
According to Sabastine Magit, the President of the Butura Youth Movement, the victims were working at the site when gunmen, speaking in the Fulani dialect, opened fire. Four youths were killed instantly, and five others suffered injuries.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Bwefuk Musa, 21
- Klingshak Dickson, 21
- Promise Joshua, 20
- Nyam Abaka, 20
Magit condemned the attack, stating, “In another unprovoked assault on the Butura community, armed terrorists opened fire on innocent youths working at a mining site near the villages of Kuba and Maikatako.” He pointed out that this incident occurred just four days after another violent event in Wumat village, where five family members, including a pregnant woman, were killed.
The attackers escaped the scene before military personnel, who were stationed nearby, could intervene. This incident adds to a troubling pattern, with more than 20 individuals from the Butura community reportedly killed in the last month, allegedly by Fulani assailants.
The injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment, while local authorities and security forces have been alerted. Tensions in the area remain high as the community grapples with this latest act of violence.
