Nigerian Army Dismantles IPOB/ESN Camp, Arrests Gunrunner, and Rescues Hostages

In a significant move against terrorism and organized crime, the Nigerian Army has successfully dismantled an armed group’s camp, arrested a gunrunner, and facilitated the surrender of Boko Haram fighters. These operations demonstrate the army’s commitment to maintaining national security and restoring peace in affected regions.

On a recent operation in Anambra State, troops targeted a hideout used by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). This operation took place in the Enugwu Umuonyia community, located in the Aguata Local Government Area.

The raid involved a fierce firefight, during which the terrorists were overwhelmed by the army’s coordinated efforts. Many of the terrorists fled, leaving behind a substantial amount of weapons and logistical supplies. The soldiers swiftly searched the area, uncovering a cache of arms, including:

  • 78 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition
  • 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition
  • 20 live cartridges
  • A pump-action shotgun
  • A locally fabricated pistol
  • An AK-56 magazine
  • Six vehicles

The troops also destroyed the hideout used by the terrorists, showcasing their commitment to eradicating threats to national security and protecting local communities from violence.

In a separate operation on October 9, 2024, the Nigerian Army made a significant arrest in Plateau State. Troops conducted a precision stop-and-search operation along the Mangar-Bokkos road, where they intercepted a well-known gunrunner named Mathew Caleb, 35 years old.

Caleb was found in possession of dangerous weapons, including:

  • A fabricated revolver rifle
  • A fabricated pistol
  • 23 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition
  • 2 rounds of 9mm ammunition
  • A motorcycle

At the time of his arrest, Caleb was en route to Bokkos town, intending to deliver these deadly weapons to buyers. This operation not only disrupted his plans but also prevented further illegal arms distribution in the region.

Additionally, the army’s efforts led to the arrest of two motorcycle snatchers and a robber in the Bokkos Local Government Area. During this operation, the troops seized:

  • A fabricated pistol
  • 4 rounds of 9mm ammunition
  • A motorcycle

These arrests are part of the army’s broader strategy to combat crime and improve security in Plateau State, where motorcycle theft has been a rising concern.

In another key development, the Nigerian Army reported the surrender of 15 weary Boko Haram fighters along with their families in the Gwoza and Bama Local Government areas of Borno State. This surrender indicates a significant weakening of Boko Haram’s influence in the region and is a hopeful sign for ongoing peace efforts.

The Nigerian Army’s recent operations highlight its determination to eradicate threats posed by terrorist groups and criminal organizations. Through strategic raids, targeted arrests, and the dismantling of criminal networks, the army is taking substantial steps toward ensuring safety and stability across Nigeria. These actions not only protect citizens but also send a strong message to those who threaten the peace of the nation.

As the army continues its efforts, it remains crucial for local communities to support these initiatives and report any suspicious activities to aid in the fight against terrorism and crime.
