The Ogun State Police have arrested five suspects accused of being involved in the death of a fisherman named Segun Sikiru in Iwopin, a town in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area. According to reports, the suspects killed the fisherman by hitting him with a bamboo stick and dumping his body in a lagoon.
The five individuals—Saheed Mureni, Afeez Mureni, Saheed Taidi, Thompson Samuel, and Ogoji Olorunwa—are all from the same community. They were arrested on Sunday, September 29, 2024, by officers from the Abigi Police Division after the family of the deceased reported the incident to the authorities.
On the day of the incident, Segun and his two sons went fishing in the community. They noticed suspicious activity near their fish trap, known locally as Iki. As they approached, they saw the suspects stealing from the trap. When Segun tried to raise an alarm, the suspects allegedly attacked him with a bamboo stick, hitting him in the chest. His two sons managed to escape, but Segun did not survive.
The attackers, realizing Segun was unconscious, threw his body into the lagoon. The body was later recovered and taken to the mortuary in Ijebu-Ode. The police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest of the suspects and stated that the investigation is still ongoing.
This tragic event has shocked the Iwopin community, as police continue to gather more information on what led to the murder. The police are working hard to ensure that justice is served.
