Two Women Arrested for Selling a 5-Year-Old Boy for N600,000 in Akwa Ibom

In a disturbing case from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, two women have been arrested for the abduction and sale of a 5-year-old boy. The suspects, Blessing Elijah Sylvester, 35, and Ofonime Etim Essien, 50, were apprehended by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command after allegedly selling the child for a staggering N600,000.

The abduction took place in Ikot Enua, where Blessing Sylvester is from, while Ofonime Etim Essien hails from Ikot Abiyan in Nsit Atai. Reports suggest that the women had planned the abduction carefully, targeting the young boy for financial gain. The case has raised significant concern among parents and community members regarding the safety of children in the area.

The police, led by CP Joseph Eribo, have made it a priority to address child trafficking and abduction cases in the state. During a press conference on Monday, September 30, 2024, in Uyo, the commissioner detailed the arrests and emphasized the importance of vigilance within communities. He stated, “We are committed to protecting our children and will take all necessary measures to bring those who engage in such heinous acts to justice.”

The police investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the abduction. They are also exploring the possibility of other individuals being involved in this case.

The incident has sparked outrage and fear among residents. Parents are urged to be more cautious and to educate their children about safety measures. Community leaders are calling for greater awareness and involvement from everyone to help combat child trafficking. “We must work together to protect our children from these threats,” said a local leader during a community meeting.

Authorities have encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the police. The safety of children should be a top priority, and community members play a crucial role in safeguarding their wellbeing. The police have set up hotlines and are increasing patrols in areas identified as high-risk for child abduction.

This case highlights the urgent need for collective action to combat child abduction and trafficking in Nigeria. The Akwa Ibom police are dedicated to tackling this issue head-on, ensuring that justice is served and that children are kept safe. Community awareness and proactive measures are essential in preventing such tragic incidents in the future.

“There is also a case of child stealing where children are taken from this state and sold outside for various amounts including a child sold for N400,000 and another sold for N600,000. We have two women and other suspects with us,” the CP stated.
