A civil rights organisation in Akwa Ibom State, the Centre for Human Rights Accountability Network (CHRAN), has expressed concern over JAMB’s refusal to recognize the Akwa Ibom State University of Education, Afaha Nsit, for the 2026/2027 UTME. The institution was upgraded from a College of Education to a university by the state government in December 2025.
Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo, CHRAN Director, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, explained that certain irregularities may be responsible for the situation. He noted that the 2026 state budget still listed the institution as a College of Education rather than a University of Education, creating confusion about its legal and administrative status.
The group further pointed out that the institution currently lacks key university structures such as a Vice-Chancellor, Governing Council, academic brief, master plan, and other principal officers. CHRAN also raised concerns that the law establishing the upgraded university has not been clearly made public, which could affect its recognition by regulatory bodies.
CHRAN warned that unless these issues are urgently addressed, agencies such as JAMB, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and TETFund may continue to withhold recognition. The group also advised union leaders within the institution to work cooperatively with the state government to strengthen the university’s foundation and protect its reputation.
