Breakdown By Religion Of Nigerians Killed Between 2019-2023

Data from the Organization for Research and Analysis (ORFA, 2024) shows that between 2019 and 2023, a total of 30,880 Nigerians were killed in violent incidents across the country. Among the victims, Christians accounted for 16,769 deaths, representing 72.4% of those with known religious affiliation. Muslims accounted for 6,235 deaths, while traditional religion practitioners numbered 154. In addition, the religious affiliation of 7,722 victims remained unknown.

The statistics reveal a stark disparity in casualties among different religious groups. For every 10 Muslim civilians killed, roughly 27 Christians lost their lives, giving a ratio of 1:2.7. This shows that Christians bore the heaviest burden among victims of violent incidents during the five-year period.

Experts say the data underscores the need for targeted security measures and inclusive policies to protect all communities in Nigeria. They emphasise that understanding the religious and regional patterns of violence can help authorities respond more effectively and prevent further loss of life.

The report highlights the importance of accurate data collection and monitoring. It urges both government and civil society organisations to take preventive action, address the root causes of violence, and promote peace across communities regardless of faith or background.
