Nigeria’s political parties lack ideologies – APC chieftain

Shitu Kabir, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that political parties in Nigeria lack clear ideologies to guide the country forward. Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’, Kabir stressed the need to reform political parties so they can operate based on defined principles.

According to him, all hands must be on deck to create parties that differ from the current system, which he described as ideologically weak. He suggested that the country’s presidential system should be adjusted to better reflect Nigeria’s unique political and cultural context.

Kabir explained that building ideological parties requires a shift in power from the national level to the states. He emphasized that states should have greater control over their resources, health services, education, and security systems, allowing local governments to manage what affects their communities directly.

He added that by giving states this kind of power, political parties can focus on clear principles and policies instead of merely chasing elections. Kabir concluded that a more devolved system of governance would create a platform for ideological battles that could drive meaningful progress in Nigeria.
