FAAN to close Lagos Airport Terminal 1 for 22-month renovation

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to close Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, from March 2026. The closure is part of a major renovation project aimed at upgrading the ageing terminal to meet modern aviation standards. FAAN said the renovation is expected to last about 22 months.

According to the authority, the project will involve extensive rehabilitation and expansion works designed to improve passenger comfort, safety, and handling capacity. Terminal 1, one of Nigeria’s oldest international airport facilities, will undergo structural upgrades to support growing air traffic and enhance overall efficiency.

To reduce disruption to international flights, FAAN disclosed that a temporary international departure terminal has been constructed. The facility, covering about 8,000 square metres, is nearing completion and will initially serve between five and six international airlines. Passengers have been advised to arrive earlier than usual, as airlines will gradually relocate operations and extra time may be required for security checks.

FAAN assured travellers that international arrivals and cargo services will continue at other airport facilities during the renovation period. The project will also include the construction of a skywalk connecting Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, upgrades to surrounding roads, and expanded apron space to accommodate wide-body aircraft, all aimed at improving the airport’s long-term capacity and functionality.
