Human rights lawyer and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba, has called on state legislatures to take urgent steps to end medical negligence in hospitals across the country. He said the continued poor treatment of patients is unacceptable and demands immediate legislative attention.
Agbakoba emphasized that lawmakers have the power to make policies and pass laws that hold hospitals accountable and improve health care delivery. He noted that citizens often suffer or die because health facilities lack proper management, resources, and supervision.
The human rights activist also stressed the need for oversight committees and regular inspections of public and private hospitals. According to him, prompt action by state assemblies could reduce preventable deaths and ensure that patients receive timely and quality care.
Agbakoba concluded by urging legislators not to delay and to prioritize health reforms. He called on governments at all levels to provide the necessary funding, infrastructure, and staff training so that medical negligence becomes a thing of the past.
