Police arrest two suspected gunrunners, recover ammunition in Katsina

Katsina State Police Command has arrested two suspected gunrunners and recovered six AK-47 magazines and 305 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition. The arrests took place on January 27, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., during an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation along the Zaria–Funtua Road, the police spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq, said.

The suspects were intercepted while riding a motorcycle, and a search revealed the ammunition neatly concealed on their persons. Preliminary investigations indicated that the arms were collected from Jos, Plateau State, and were reportedly destined for a suspected armed bandit leader in the region.

The Commissioner of Police in Katsina, Bello Shehu, praised the operatives for the arrest and urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information to strengthen security along highways. The suspects and the recovered ammunition are now in police custody, while investigations continue to uncover the network behind the arms trafficking.

The Katsina police stated that the suspects would be charged to court after investigations are concluded. The arrest is part of intensified policing directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at curbing arms trafficking and enhancing public safety.
