The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has warned residents to stop attacking, threatening or obstructing its enforcement officers while they carry out their duties across the state. The agency said it is worried by recent cases of intimidation and physical assaults on its personnel during routine enforcement exercises.
Speaking on the issue, LAWMA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that enforcement officers are on the field to protect public health, ensure compliance with waste management laws and keep Lagos clean. He described attacks on officers as unacceptable and harmful to public order and environmental safety.
Gbadegesin stressed that LAWMA will take firm legal action against anyone found harassing or assaulting its staff. He noted that all enforcement activities are supported by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, which empowers the agency to sanction offenders and also protects officers carrying out lawful duties.
The LAWMA boss urged residents to cooperate with officials, follow approved waste disposal methods and report environmental violations through the right channels instead of resorting to violence. He also called on community leaders, market groups and transport unions to support LAWMA’s efforts, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier and safer Lagos for everyone.
