Ogun State has received high marks from the World Bank for its exceptional performance in women empowerment and effective implementation of the Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP). A high-level World Bank delegation, including Vice President for Operations Policy and Country Services, Ms. Gallina Vicelette, and Country Director, Mr. Mathew Verghis, visited the state to assess the NFWP Scale-Up initiative and its impact on local communities.
During the visit, the team interacted with Women Affinity Groups, including the Odeda Tailoring Collective, observing operations like savings contributions, loan applications, and repayments. The delegation praised the project’s structure, noting its dual approach of providing women access to finance and markets while challenging social norms that limit opportunities for women and girls.
Project officials highlighted that between 200,000 and 300,000 women are expected to benefit directly in Ogun State over the next 18 months. The state government’s strong support, including substantial counterpart funding, was recognized as a key factor in the project’s success. Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, commended the administration’s deliberate and passionate approach to governance and grassroots empowerment.
Beneficiaries of the programme, such as members of the Ifesowapo Odeda Fashion Designer Collective, shared personal testimonies of business growth and improved livelihoods, underscoring the project’s transformational impact. The World Bank delegation affirmed that Ogun State’s proactive implementation serves as a model for effective project delivery in women empowerment initiatives across Nigeria.
