Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has accused certain politicians of sponsoring the renewed Monday sit-at-home observed in parts of the South East, particularly affecting Onitsha Main Market and Nnewi. Speaking at a press briefing in Awka, the governor described the shutdown as a deliberate attempt to disrupt economic activities in the state, calling it an act of “economic sabotage.”
Governor Soludo warned that the one-week closure imposed on Onitsha Main Market last Monday would remain in effect and could be extended for up to two additional weeks if traders fail to reopen after the current sanction expires. He emphasized that the state government has the legal authority over the market, including revoking shop ownership rights, paying compensation, and taking control of the facility for public interest.
The governor dismissed threats from traders to pursue legal action over the closure, stressing that the market is under government jurisdiction and decisions are made to ensure public safety and order. He questioned the timing of the sit-at-home orders, noting that the market operated freely during the Christmas and New Year period without major security incidents.
Soludo reiterated that his administration would not tolerate coordinated efforts aimed at disrupting commerce, urging traders to resume normal activities while promising that the government would safeguard the state’s economic interests.
