Manchester United legend Roy Keane has strongly criticised Michael Carrick, insisting the former midfielder is not qualified to become the club’s permanent manager. Keane made the comments after United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, a result that pushed the Red Devils into fourth place on the Premier League table. Despite the impressive win, Keane said Carrick should not be considered for the long-term role.
According to Keane, even winning all remaining matches this season would not be enough to convince him. He argued that Manchester United is too big a club to gamble on an inexperienced manager. While praising the team’s recent energy and confidence, Keane stressed that short-term success should not cloud judgment about what the club truly needs to compete for league titles again.
Keane also pointed out that United benefited from key players returning and from facing opponents who had played tough midweek games. He admitted that Carrick’s team showed passion and belief against Arsenal, especially after goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu and the late winner by Matheus Cunha. Still, Keane believes these factors do not change the bigger picture about leadership and long-term planning.
The former United captain concluded that Carrick may enjoy the moment, but the club must think ahead. He said Manchester United require a more experienced and proven manager capable of handling pressure and restoring the club’s dominance. Keane made it clear that, in his view, Carrick is not the man to lead United back to winning Premier League titles.
