Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has defended his decision to continue inviting Cristiano Ronaldo to the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the forward still plays an important role despite his age. Martinez said Ronaldo is no longer the same player he was over 20 years ago, but his current impact remains valuable.

Speaking in an interview, the Portugal boss explained that Ronaldo has adjusted his style of play and now operates mainly as a striker who relies on positioning and experience rather than pace.
