2026 World cup: ‘He’s not same player of 21 years ago’ – Portugal boss, Martinez on inviting Ronaldo

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has defended his decision to continue inviting Cristiano Ronaldo to the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the forward still plays an important role despite his age. Martinez said Ronaldo is no longer the same player he was over 20 years ago, but his current impact remains valuable.

Speaking in an interview, the Portugal boss explained that Ronaldo has adjusted his style of play and now operates mainly as a striker who relies on positioning and experience rather than pace. He praised the Al-Nassr star’s goal record, noting that scoring 25 goals in his last 30 international games shows he is still effective at the highest level.

Martinez also highlighted Ronaldo’s leadership and commitment, describing him as a strong influence in the dressing room. According to the coach, the 40-year-old’s experience, having played over 220 international matches, makes him a role model who motivates younger players and helps guide the team on and off the pitch.

Addressing concerns about Ronaldo’s work rate, Martinez said selection is based on present contribution, not past achievements. He added that commitment and the right attitude are key factors, insisting that any player who lacks effort or dedication would not be called up, regardless of their reputation.
