INEC should be clean beyond suspicion – Ibrahim Gambari

Former United Nations Secretary-General, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, has emphasized the importance of credibility and trust in Nigeria’s electoral system. Speaking during an interview, he said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must operate in a way that leaves no room for doubt or suspicion among Nigerians.

Gambari described INEC as the “electoral referee,” noting that its role demands the highest level of integrity. He compared the commission to “Caesar’s wife,” stressing that it must be clean beyond suspicion, not only in technical competence but also in public perception. According to him, trust is central to the acceptance of election outcomes.

Reflecting on past approaches, Gambari noted that Nigeria has tried appointing judges and professors to head INEC in the hope that neutrality and justice would be guaranteed. However, he said experience has shown that titles alone do not ensure credibility or fairness in electoral management.

He concluded that what Nigeria truly needs are individuals with proven integrity, strong character, and a clear record of fairness. Gambari also stressed the role of civil society in holding INEC officials accountable and ensuring they remain independent and focused on their constitutional duties.
