Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained why he does not own land or a house in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory. Obi said his decision is personal and based on his lifestyle and values, not because he lacks the means to acquire property in the city.
According to him, owning property in Abuja has never been a priority. Obi noted that he prefers a simple way of living and believes that public office holders should avoid unnecessary accumulation of assets, especially in political power centres. He stressed that leadership should be about service, not personal comfort or display of wealth.
The former Anambra State governor also explained that he spends limited time in Abuja and therefore sees no need to invest heavily in property there. He added that his focus has always been on productive investments that create value, support businesses, and help grow the economy rather than tying resources down in luxury assets.
Obi’s explanation has sparked discussions among Nigerians, with many praising his modest lifestyle while others debate the expectations of political leaders. The statement once again highlights his consistent message on prudence, accountability, and responsible leadership in public life.
