Rivers crisis: Impeachment not constitutional, politically motivated – Advocacy Centre

A civil society organisation, the Good Governance Advocacy Centre (GGAC), has said the impeachment attempt against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, is not based on the constitution but on political interests. The group described the move as a witch-hunt and warned that it could damage democracy and stability in the state if it continues.

GGAC said it carried out a 72-hour review of the impeachment notice, financial records and relevant sections of the constitution and found no act of gross misconduct against the governor or his deputy. According to the organisation, the allegations raised by lawmakers fall within the normal powers of the executive and do not meet the legal standard required for impeachment under Section 188 of the constitution.

The group linked the impeachment process to the ongoing political rivalry between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. It said the Rivers State House of Assembly is being used as a political tool in a wider power struggle, turning impeachment into a method of political pressure rather than a genuine accountability process.

GGAC called on lawmakers to suspend the impeachment and seek dialogue instead, warning that continuing the process could cause instability and distract the government from governance, security and development. It urged political leaders, elders and civil society groups to intervene and prevent what it described as an avoidable political and constitutional crisis in Rivers State.
