Social media, X restored in Venezuela after year‑long block

Social media platform X has been restored for users in Venezuela after being blocked for more than a year. The popular site, formerly known as Twitter, became accessible again on Tuesday, allowing Venezuelans to send posts, follow news and reconnect with others online.

The block began in 2024 when former President Nicolás Maduro’s government restricted access to the platform amid political tensions following a disputed election and heated exchanges between Maduro and X’s owner, Elon Musk. During that period, many people used alternative methods like VPNs to reach the site.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, who took leadership after Maduro was removed from power, marked the reopening by updating her X profile with a message calling for unity, economic improvement and social justice. Government officials and citizens quickly began using the platform again to share updates and opinions.

The return of X is significant for many Venezuelans who rely on social media for news, communication and business. Before the block, the platform was widely used by government officials, journalists and everyday users — and its restoration is being viewed as a step toward freer online expression.
