The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has accused the Nigeria Police Force of intimidating its candidate in Niger State over an election petition currently before the tribunal. The party said the alleged intimidation is aimed at forcing the candidate to withdraw the case and abandon efforts to challenge the outcome of the election through legal means.
In a statement issued by the party’s leadership, the SDP claimed that police officers have repeatedly summoned and questioned the candidate in ways that go beyond routine investigation. According to the party, such actions amount to harassment and pose a threat to democratic rights, especially the right of citizens to seek justice through the courts.
The SDP warned that security agencies must remain neutral and professional, particularly in politically sensitive matters. It stressed that using law enforcement to pressure opposition figures undermines public trust and weakens the credibility of the electoral process.
The party called on the Inspector-General of Police and relevant authorities to intervene and stop any form of intimidation. It also urged civil society groups and the general public to closely monitor the situation to ensure that the rule of law and democratic principles are protected.
