The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has raised concern over the growing level of drug abuse among young people and warned that the trend could seriously harm families and the future of the country. He urged parents and guardians to become more involved in guiding their children and monitoring their behaviour to prevent them from falling into substance abuse.
The traditional ruler made the call at his palace while receiving members of the Igunuko masquerade ahead of the 2026 Igunuko Festival. He stressed that the home remains the first place where children learn values and discipline, adding that early guidance, moral training and positive role models are key to raising responsible youths.
Oba Akiolu said protecting young people from harmful habits should not be left to families alone. He encouraged communities, religious bodies and government agencies to work together to raise awareness and provide support systems that will help youths live healthy and drug-free lives. He also praised cultural institutions for helping to shape character and promote unity.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the Igunuko masquerade, Oloye Musibau Adigun Olukotun, said the group visited the palace to seek royal blessings ahead of their annual festival. He described the Igunuko tradition as a symbol of peace, protection and moral discipline, adding that it helps teach young people about their culture and values while strengthening community bonds.
