The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has weighed in on the ongoing political clash between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The opposition coalition described President Bola Tinubu as the key beneficiary of the rivalry, with the state’s politics increasingly under federal influence.
CUPP criticized both Wike and Fubara for prioritizing personal survival and loyalty to the Presidency over the welfare of Rivers residents. “Ordinary citizens are the real victims, as peace, governance, and democratic rights are being traded for fleeting political gains,” the coalition said in a statement signed by its National Secretary, High Chief Peter Ameh.
The group noted that multiple interventions, including peace accords and state-level negotiations, have only strengthened federal control, leaving both political heavyweights effectively under the authority of President Tinubu. CUPP emphasized that the rivalry has hindered governance, disrupted development, and eroded institutional integrity in the state.
Calling for vigilance, CUPP urged Rivers citizens to demand responsible, issue-based leadership that prioritizes the people’s needs over personal ambitions. The coalition reaffirmed its dedication to defending democracy and warned against unchecked federal overreach in state matters, noting the dangers such interference poses for Nigeria’s federalism.
