An Igbo community group has warned that it will not tolerate electoral irregularities in the 2027 general elections, citing the challenges and controversies that affected the 2023 polls. The community leaders urged political parties, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.
Speaking during a town hall meeting, the leaders stressed the need for transparency in the electoral process, emphasizing that voters’ rights must be protected. They highlighted past incidents of vote-buying, ballot snatching, and intimidation, which they said undermined the democratic will of the people.
The group called on political stakeholders to engage citizens in meaningful dialogue and strengthen civic education ahead of the polls. They also encouraged youths and other community members to actively monitor and report any attempts to manipulate election outcomes.
Analysts note that this move reflects growing demands from communities across Nigeria for credible elections. By taking a firm stance, the Igbo community hopes to safeguard democracy and ensure that the 2027 elections are free from the irregularities that plagued the previous polls.
