A former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata Amupitan, has called on election officials and stakeholders to ensure that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) becomes the most trusted election body in Africa before the 2027 general elections. He said Nigeria has the chance to set a new standard for free, fair and transparent elections on the continent.
Amupitan stressed that credible elections are the foundation of democracy and public trust. According to him, if INEC improves its processes, adopts technology wisely and acts independently, Nigerians will have more confidence in election results and political stability will improve.
He urged politicians, civil society groups, the media and voters to support INEC in doing the right thing. He warned that no election body can succeed if politicians continue to interfere or if citizens do not take responsibility for protecting their votes.
Amupitan concluded by saying that history should remember this generation of leaders as the ones who helped build a credible electoral system. He said the 2027 elections offer Nigeria a chance to prove that democracy can truly work for the people.
