The Zamfara State Government has accused federal security operatives of harassing and intimidating opposition figures in the state. The government said one of its officials, Saleem Abubakar, was taken away by a special security unit without being shown any arrest warrant. It claimed he was first moved to an unknown location and later transferred between different facilities, raising concerns about his safety and whereabouts.
In a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the government described the incident as disturbing and dangerous for democracy. It warned that such actions could damage public trust in national security institutions and make them appear politically biased. The state government said security agencies must remain neutral and respect the rule of law at all times.
The government has now called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and ensure that security agencies follow due process in their operations. It stressed that if there are any allegations against Abubakar or any other person, the proper step is to charge them in court instead of carrying out arrests in a secretive manner.
Zamfara authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and will pursue all legal steps to protect the rights of those affected. They added that the issue is not just about one individual but about safeguarding democratic principles and preventing abuse of power by state institutions.
