The Federal Government has explained why it cannot immediately meet all the demands being made by resident doctors across the country. Officials say that while they understand the doctors’ concerns about welfare, pay, and working conditions, some of the requests require legal changes, budget approval, and long-term planning that cannot be done overnight.
According to government representatives, certain demands would place heavy pressure on the national budget and could affect funding for other important sectors like education, security and infrastructure. They added that some issues raised by the doctors fall under the responsibilities of state governments and hospital management boards, not the federal authorities alone.
The government also noted that it is already working on improving the health sector through ongoing reforms, recruitment of more health workers, and upgrading hospital facilities. However, it stressed that changes must follow due process and existing laws, which makes it impossible to approve every demand at once, no matter how genuine they may be.
Authorities appealed to resident doctors to remain patient and continue dialogue, promising that negotiations would continue. They assured that the aim is to reach a fair solution that improves doctors’ welfare while keeping the health system stable and affordable for Nigerians.
