The Chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, Ugochukwu Okoye, has said that the party will not be weakened by the reported defection of its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Okoye explained that the party in Anambra is built on strong structures, loyal members, and a clear political ideology that goes beyond any single individual.
He said the Labour Party remains popular in Anambra because people believe in its message of good governance, accountability, and people-focused leadership. According to him, while Peter Obi played a major role in raising the party’s profile, the movement has now grown bigger than one personality and will continue to attract support across the state.
Okoye also dismissed fears that Obi’s exit could cause mass defections, insisting that party members are committed and focused on strengthening the party ahead of future elections. He said the Labour Party leadership is already working to mobilize supporters at the grassroots level and prepare credible candidates for upcoming contests.
He urged party members and supporters to remain calm and united, stressing that political movements must be driven by shared values and institutions, not just popular figures. Okoye said the Labour Party in Anambra remains strong, organized, and ready to compete effectively in future elections.
